Concussion is a brain injury defined by the Concussion in Sport Group as “a complex pathophysiological process affecting the brain, induced by biomechanical forces” and resulting “in the rapid onset of short-lived impairment of neurological function that resolves spontaneously”. Concussion may result from a direct impact to the head, neck or face, or to somewhere else on the body that transmits an impulsive force to the hear. Loss of consciousness is not a common feature of most concussions. The acute clinical symptoms of concussion represent a functional rather than a structural brain injury.
